House on a Crest is a home for a young family escaping the pressures of Los Angeles for the small town charm of Washington State. The house was conceived of as a container for the eclectic lifestyle of this family of four. The former gallery owners needed the home to double as a storage space for their collection of furniture, paintings, sculpture, and records.
The house joins two symmetrical gabled forms in a Y chromosome fashion. Effectively giving the home the appearance of a single gabled barn at one end and a dodecagonal barn at the other. At the entry level, the home opens up to panoramic views of the White Salmon River and a meadow two hundred feet from the home. A single deck bridges the kitchen, the living room, and the primary bedroom together. At its base, the home meets the ground by nesting itself within the sloping hillside, creating a house that only reveals itself after the approach.
